Harbor 04:38
I’ve got water beneath your curtain call A masterful conclusion of desire I’ve got lessons to be learned, mouths to feed The lesser this conquest dreams to inspire I’ve got notations beneath your sideways fall A notorious refusal of the tire treads back to the stalls I’ve got young ones to teach, hearts that require A turning of the tides, we each will take them down Summer, we strive Autumn, we take the future Winter, the worst of the days Call across the harbor Someone is walking down this empty road Allover you spread yourself thin and decipher the code Rest in pieces, darling, you’ve got a heavy load I’ve got worries beneath your catacombs A disastrous retribution of pariahs I’ve got a semblance of peace, brains to retrieve The more that we can conspire, rewire my desire.

Dark 01:27
You left me high and dry Just in the nick of time Underplayed like a fountain of youth in your constructs You left me asking and wondering why You took all the feelings and made them into stone You left me in the dark and I cannot find the light switch You left me in the room without a hand to find the way It’s a slap in the face when you know the truth.

Stairs 04:46
You rat on me, I’ll rat on you Distinction of a melody told what to do I’ll sink or swim in this ocean I’ll drown or breathe the air for so few Time is a letter You fall in love with me, I’ll fall in tastes to you Jargon of a past that mends the eyes imbued Push me down the stairs or push me into strain Put me in the car or drive me so the rest will go Time is a number Dress me in a sweater, say you love me Before the rains come Down me in a pattern, say you’ll want me Before the rest is said and done Your secret papers on a fail to flee Gardens in your pocket will blindly see I’ll fight or take the flight endlessly I’ll fight for you, I’ll be the stead for you Time is our nothing.

about

Much like the scope of previous albums like my very first, Maya, and then later ones such as In the Presence of the Pointless, Holocaust and Hard to Swallow, A House is a work that was centrally based in the mixed musical worlds of progressive/art rock with tinges of electronica as well as reaching toward the classical roots that I have touched on in separate projects.

While not a concept album in the sense that Nomadic was, I keep the common theme of things within or surrounding a typical, everyday house very prevalent in both the song titles and the mood that is set for each particular song.

And whereas immediately preceding records held a particular flow,
I wanted to create something completely “off the beaten path”, that was even less commercial than Holocaust ended up being (with two singles off that record). I didn’t want inaccessibility, however, and this balance ended up being the biggest challenge I encountered while creating A House.

The songs here achieve the goal of taking commerciality and throwing it in the trash – all while keeping the “interesting” aspect intact. It was time to take art, mix up peoples’ definitions of it, and wildly manipulate the limits that we confine to the word BOUNDARIES.

Evan Schafer Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

My name is Evan Schafer. I am an indie musician with a strong grounding in traditional composition, but the material always has a unique flair. I guarantee not being bored out of your gourd when turning on one of the records. I produce, mix, and engineer everything myself, and have done so since late 2005. ... more
