about

For a while now, I have been meaning to make a record that shows off my more improvisatory nature when I’m sitting at the piano alone – without the distractions of other people, without the harshness and intimidation of a studio environment to make things more stressful, and without the production techniques that many of my “singer-songwriter records” rely on in order to sound good enough to release. This, in essence, means that everything you hear here has been captured at moments in time when inspiration was inevitably going to occur.

I am also indebted to many people who have heard me doodling around when I’m not sitting down to actually write something – such as a song or sketches for a contemporary classical piece – and have asked me when I’m going to record an album of material similar to the doodling they’ve encountered. Obviously, this isn’t hard for me to do, but I never found the time or interest in actually capturing any of these improvisations in a studio environment due to the very nature of performing without a plan.

The music here is by no means rehearsed prior to its recording and, out of the many pieces I ended up recording for inclusion on this record, I hope I have chosen some of the better pieces – ones that I feel express the deepest emotion without being pretentious, ones that conjure something up in those who appreciate the work I am putting into these six works, all off the top of my head.

about

Evan Schafer Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

My name is Evan Schafer. I am an indie musician with a strong grounding in traditional composition, but the material always has a unique flair. I guarantee not being bored out of your gourd when turning on one of the records. I produce, mix, and engineer everything myself, and have done so since late 2005. ... more
